Introduction
Kataev (2021) noted that the systematic position of this species has been changed repeatedly (see Generic Combinations), most recently with Larochelle & Larivière (2005) referring it back to the original placement in Harpalus. However Kataev (2021) believed that the re-description of H. australasiae by Larochelle & Larivière (2005), while correctly placing the species in Harpalus, was actually based on specimens of H. parvulus, a widely introduced species native to southern Africa. He suggested that the status of H. australasiae Dejean, 1829 required further study and that the only extant type, a female holotype, may originally have been a mislabelled specimen from Africa. Kataev (2021) further noted that some records of H. australasiae from Australia and New Zealand were referable to Hypharpax australis (Dejean, 1929) and some other species of Hypharpax and that a revision of that genus was also much needed.
