Family CYZICIDAE Stebbing, 1910

Introduction

Members of this family are easily recognised by many distinctive feactures, including valves thick and swollen, more or les oval and with many growth rings and a well developed umbo (details in Richter & Timms 2005). However, designation to genus us difficult as there is no agreement on generic characters.

Depending on author, there is either (a) one extant genus (Cyzicus with Estheria as a synonym), the original position (e.g. Dakin 1914; Henry 1924) and recently promoted by Naganawa (2001), or (b) two genera (Cyzicus and Eocyzicus), supported by Brtek (1997) and Naganawa & Orgiljanova (2000), or (c) three genera (Cyzicus, Eocyzicus and Caenestheria) proposed by Straškraba (1965) and supported by Sassaman (1995), or four genera (three aforementioned plus Caenestheriella), first advocated by Daday (1914) and accepted with reservations by many modern authors (e.g. Pennak 1989; Martin 1992; Maeda-Martínez et al. 1997; Richter & Timms 2005). In Australia until 2005, all authors followed Henry (1924) and used the generic name Cyzicus for all species. However according to Richter & Timms (2005) this genus does not occur in Australia, but the other three of Daday's genera (Caenestheria, Caenestehriella and Eocyzicus) do. This position is followed here.
