- C.A.Gardner, Enum. Pl. Austral. Occ. 138 (1931) lists "Arctotis nivea (L.) Hoff." as an accepted name, possibly in error for Arctotheca nivea (Less.) Lewin, but this name does not appear to have ever been validly published. A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 253 (1991) also lists "Arctotis nivea (L.f.) Hoffm." (note different basionym author), and suggests Gardner may have published a new combination by indirect reference to the basionym. This name is treated here as new, but invalidly published, as it is unclear as to which Linnaean taxon is supposedly the basionym.
