The Australian Plant Name Index (APNI) is a tool for the botanical community that deals with plant names and their usage in the scientific literature, whether as a current name or synonym. APNI does not recommend any particular taxonomy or nomenclature. Etymology: "The name is presumably a reference to cajeput oil, an essential oil present in the leaves of many plants from the family Myrtaceae, of which Eucalyptus is a member (cajeput oil consists mainly of cineol, which is also the main constituent of Eucalyptus oil). The name 'cajeput' is from the Indonesian kayu meaning 'white' [sic; 'wood'] and putih meaning 'wood' [sic; 'white'], in reference to the Melaleuca species from which the oil is traditionally produced."
