Type: "--- collected from a sandy bed exposed during 1947 and 1948 on top of the early Tertiary brown coal at the Lucifer Mine, Bacchus Marsh, Victoria."

Etymology: "... show definite cycadean affinities inasmuch as they are in close structural agreement with leaflets of Macrozamia hopei (W. Hill) F. M. Bailey of North Queensland. For this reason they have been referred to Macrozamia and given the specific name 'hopeites'."
