Etymology: "The specific epithet was given in honour of Mr. Andrew A. MITCHELL, who was then officer in charge of the Australian Department of Agriculture KARRATHA, Western Australia. He has for many years provided us with valuable Ptilotus material from his own collections, e.g. Ptilotus trichocephalus (BENL 1990), and has now kindly sent me specimens of the new taxon treated here."
