  • Type: R.Brown(holo BM, Bennett's numbering 3106 p.p., no original label, photo seen). Probably collected on 3-4 Dec 1802 from Bountiful Island, near Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria (Groves & Moore 1989). Recent collections on that island have included this taxon (Clarkson 7649).

  • Comment: 'It would appear that C. angulata is more widespread than has been realized. In this connection Hill (1992, 1994, 1996) has recently proposed about a dozen new species and several subspecies for populations within the range of C. armstrongii and C. media that correspond closely to C. angulata. He relies on distinctions that tend to be unreliable, but are often selected for horticultiral purposes....For the time being we must place these species in synonymy pending further testing of their validity.' APNI note: this is a notoriously difficult family to revise. Some of Hill's species (highlighted by de Laubenfels in this article) ARE very difficult to distinguish both in herbarium specimens and in the field. Unfortunately it does seem that this species complex needs more work. The de Laubenfels revision probably overly applies a very wide species concept, while Hill's revisions may reflect a much narrower species complex than in current use in plant taxonomy / systematics both in Australia and overseas. This is the continuing taxonomic argument between 'lumpers and splitters' referred to by Hill and Osbourne (ix, 2001). Finding a consensus solution is not always possible.

  • APC Comment: De Laubenfels & Adema, Blumea 43(2): 351-400 (1998) took a very much broader view of C. angulata than did Hill (1992, 1994, 1996) and Forster (1995) and included in synonymy C. ophiolitica, C. platyphylla, C. couttsiana, C. brunnea, C. arnhemica, C. orientis, C. canalis subsp. carinata, C. desolata, C. badensis, C. maconochiei, C. semota, C. tuckeri, and C. yorkiana. All are here maintained as distinct.
