  • Etymology: "From Greek, sphalma, a mistake; 'referring to the failure of botanists generally to appreciate the significance of its inflorescence, fruit and seed structure in relation to its placement within the family' (Briggs et al., 1975). White placed this species in Orites, a genus to which it is not now considered closely related."
