Dennstaedtiaceae Lotsy
Pteris esculenta G.Forst. , legitimate, scientific
Forster, J.G.A. (1786), Plantae Esculentis Insularum Oceani Australis Commentatio Botanica: 74 [tax. nov.]
  • Type: "Reperitur in sylvis insularum Societatis."
  • Comment: A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 2428 (1991) lists "Pteris esculenta Labill." and "Pteris esculenta R.Br.", both as illegitimate later homonyms of P. esculenta G.Forst. These are secondary uses of Forster's name, rather than attempts to publish new names. Labillardiere, Nov. Holl. Pl. Spec. 2: 95 (1807), clearly and directly referred to Forster under this species, and Brown indirectly referred to the same work by acknowledging that he had used Labillardiere's work in preparing his Prodromus.

  • Comment: On page 101, Swartz gives "Nova Hollandia" with a query, but only mentions "Insulis societatis" on page 296.
