Kunzea ericifolia (Sm.) Heynh. , legitimate, scientific
Heynhold, G. (1846), Alphabetische und Synonymische Aufzahlung der in der Jahren 1840 bis 1846 in den europäischen Gärten eingeführten Gewächse nebst Angabe ihres Autors: 338 BHL [comb. nov.]
basionym: Metrosideros ericifolia Sm. legitimate taxonomic synonym: Stenospermum ericaefolia Heynh. nom. inval.
  • Comment: Heynhold attributes this name to "Rchb.". H.G.L.Reichenbach, Consp. Regn. Veg. 175 (1828), indicated that several species of Metrosideros, including M. ericifolia Sm., comprised a separate genus Kunzea, but did not definitely associate the new genus name and species epithets as required by ICN Art. 35.2 (Shenzhen Code, 2018).

nomenclatural synonym: Metrosideros ericifolia Sm. legitimate taxonomic synonym: Kunzea vestita Schauer legitimate
  • Comment: Bentham attributes this name to "Rchb. Consp. 175" [i.e. H.G.L.Reichbenbach, Consp. Regni Veg. 175 (1828)], where the combination is indicated but not made. A.D.Chapman, Contr. Herb. Australiense 18: 2 (1976), treated "Kunzea ericifolia (Sm.) Benth." as a new combination by Bentham and as an illegitimate later homonym of K. ericifolia F.Muell. (1855). However, Chapman had apparently overlooked the combination published by Heynhold in 1846. Bentham's treatment constitutes a secondary reference to K. ericifolia (Sm.) Heynh. and not an attempt to publish a new name.
