Type:
"Summit of Mount Buffalo, Victoria, near the Government Chalet, growing on siliceous granite formation at 4,000 feet above sea-level, and known as Willow Gum. The species flowers in December."

Etymology:
"This species is named in honour of the late Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, Surveyor General, who collected many native plants, and was the second explorer to pass Mount Buffalo."
