"The specific epithet, subalpina, refers to the high-elevation snowgum (Eucalyptus pauciflora)-dominated forest, in which this species occurs."

"The type collection of P. subalpina (T.C. Wilson 77) was arbitrarily divided into 77A and 77B for the morphological analysis (small low-density leaf and floral morphological dataset, sLF). The holotype and isotype are from the same plant and should be treated as a single collection."
