Forster attributes the name “Carissa stolonifera (F.M.Bailey) Perrot & Vogt” to E.Perrot & E.Vogt, Trav. Lab. Mat. Méd. École Supér. Pharm. Paris 9: 112 (1912). Perrot and Vogt mention “une variété de Carissa ovata, le C. stolonifera T. M. Bailly”, citing J.L.Bancroft, Pharm. J. & Trans. London 253 (1894). Since Bancroft treats the taxon at varietal rank, Perrot & Vogt’s use of “C. stolonifera” is here regarded as a secondary reference to Carissa ovata var. stolonifera F.M.Bailey, rather than an attempt to publish a new combination.
