  • Etymology: "William Dampier, sailing in the Roebuck, entered the waters of Shark Bay on 6 August 1699 and during a stay of five or six days became the first Englishman to collect Australian plants. He also collected further along the coast but of the 25 specimens now housed in the Sherardian Herbarium, Oxford, most were from Shark Bay (George 1971 [i.e., George, A.S. The plants seen and collected in northwestern Australia by William Dampier. The Western Australian Naturalist 11: 173–178 (1971)], Marner 1999 [i.e., Marner, S. The botanical legacy of William Dampier 1699–1999 and Western Australia revisited. Oxford Plant Systematics 7: 5–8 (1999)], 2004 [i.e. Marner, S. Another Dampier specimen re-discovered in OXF. Oxford Plant Systematics 11: 12 (2004)]) and, of these, one is a daisy which has been attributed to Brachyscome s.lat. and, as suggested by its large ray florets, belongs to this distinctive group of species. With this history in mind, and with the name Dampiera already taken, I have named the genus after the Roebuck."
