"The specific epithet clarksonii honours John Richard Clarkson(1950 -), prolific collector and talented systematist, who has contributed greatly to our knowledge of the flora of far-northern Queensland. John discovered H. clarksonii over 20 years ago and was the first to recognise it as distinct from H. porteri s.s."
