  • Etymology: "Named after William Henry Nicholls (1885- 1951), bushwalker, enthusiastic orchidologist, photographer, accomplished botanical artist and botanical author who named or was involved in the nomenclature of more than 120 species of Australian orchids. Nicholls’ superb orchid paintings were compiled in a single volume published in 1969 as The Complete Edition of Orchids of Australia. My involvement, as co-editor with Bruce Muir, on this manuscript was a formative moment that inspired my botanical career. Nicholls also collected and painted this species (plate 311)."
