Text:
"The name commonly used for this taxon, "P, flavescens,' is the result of several errors and misinterpretations (Johnston 1957; Reveal & Johnston 1989). Pursh (1814) did not intend to publish a new species; he misapplied the name Viscum flavens Swartz and also misspelled the specific epithet. Swartz;s name was superfluous, because in the protologue he cited the earlier Viscum racemosim Aublet as a synonym. The earliest legitimate name for the taxon traditionally known as "P, flavescens" is Viscum serotinum Rafinesque, and the correct name in Phoradendron is P. serotinum (Refinesque) M.C.Johnston subsp. serotinum."
