A.D.Chapman, Austral. Pl. Name Index 1968 (1991), treats this name as illegitimate due to Dumont de Courset's citation of "M. thymifolia , Hortul.". However, this represents the publication of a new name by Dum.-Cours. and the reporting of prior misapplications of the name Melaleuca thymifolia Sm. to that taxon. Melaleuca thymifolia Sm. is treated separately in his work, also on page 374 (no. 15).
