common name:
Western Shield Pennywort
[n/a]
-
Etymology:
"The epithet is derived from the Latin scutella, ‘a small shield’, and fero, ‘to bear’, in reference to the lateral surfaces of the fruit bearing a ‘little shield’ on both sides of each mericarp ... The prominently raised lateral and median ribs, with the semi-circular concave surface between them, give each mericarp their characteristic shield-like appearance."
