Family HAPLOZETIDAE Grandjean, 1936

Introduction

There has been considerable confusion surrounding the oribatid families Xylobatidae, Protoribatidae and Haplozetidae. Weigmann et al. (1993) pointed out that Xylobates is a junior synonym of Protoribates, so Xylobatidae becomes a junior synonym of Protoribatidae. Protoribatidae is also a junior synonym of Haplozetidae, but Subias (2011) considered Protoribatidae and Haplozetidae to be separate families. The confusion surrounding the classification and naming of these families was reviewed by Colloff & Halliday (1998) and Norton & Behan-Pelletier (2009). As used by those authors and by Schatz et al. (2011), the family is very large and cosmopolitan, with 57 genera and 368 species. The Australian fauna includes eight identified species in four genera, and a record of an unidentified species in a further genus. Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Haplozetidae or Protoribatidae were also reported by Springett (1979), Harvey et al. (1993), Walter (1999), Osler & Murphy (2005), Callan et al. (2011), Beyer et al. (2011) and Majer et al. (2013). Callan et al. (2011) also recorded a species identified as Scheloribatidae/Protoribatidae.

Lee (1986) recorded an undescribed species of Totobates from South Australia, as Totobates species 1. Colloff & Halliday (1998) reported that this species does not belong to Totobates, but to another unknown genus.
