Genus Triclista Enderlein, 1922
- Triclista Enderlein, G. 1922. Ein neues Tabanidensystem. Mitteilungen aus dem Zoologischen Museum in Berlin 10: 333-351 [339].
Type species:
Pangonia limbinervis Enderlein, 1922 by original designation.
Introduction
Large, robust horse flies distinguished from other Scionini by the short, thick proboscis and long sabre-like palpi. Adults are known to blood-feed on livestock, horses and humans, as well as visiting Eucalyptus flowers (Mackerras 1960; Lessard 2014).
The genus was previously considered a synonym of Scaptia Walker, 1850, however, it was later reinstated to genus level based on strong molecular and morphological data (Lessard et al. 2013; Lessard 2014). A key to all three known species was provided by Mackerras (1960: couplets 2-3 of the key to former subgenus Scaptia).
