The family Thalassometridae is widespread throughout the Pacific, Atlantic and Southern oceans. It includes 14 genera, seven of which are recorded in Australian waters, represented by eight species.
This family is similar to the comatulid families Ptilometridae and Asterometridae but is distinguished by the following character states: P1 longer and stouter than P2 and cirri never longer than the arms.
