Introduction

Paxton et al. 2006 treated this species as a synonym of Solenostomus cyanopterus. Kuiter (2000) regarded some NSW records of Solenostomus cyanopterus as based on Solenostomus paegnius. It should be noted that Orr & Fritzsche (1993) and Orr et al. (2002) included Solenostomus paegenius as a junior synonym of Solenostomus cyanopterus, but we follow Kuiter (2009) and Allen & Erdmann (2012) who recognised the species as distinct. Because of the apparent similarity of the two species, distribution of both species is poorly known and some records are probably misidentifications.
