Subfamily Scolopendrinae

Introduction

The second of the scolopendrid subfamilies, the Scolopendrinae, comprises 20 genera and 200 species. It is distinguished from Otostigminae by the possession of relatively small triangular or slit-like spiracles with their long axes positioned horizontally. Representatives of the subfamily can be found throughout much of the tropics and southern parts of the Northern Hemisphere (Hoffmann 1982: 684). Six genera and 27 described species are recorded for Australia. Three undescribed or unidentified species have been reported.

Koch (1983) provided a key to the Australian genera of Scolopendrinae.
