Family SUIDASIIDAE Hughes, 1948

Introduction

The family Suidasiidae includes five genera and 18 species world-wide. Most species are found in birds' nests, but some occur in domestic habitats such as stored food and house dust. Some species of Suidasia have been implicated as a cause of allergy and dermatitis in humans (Hughes 1976; OConnor 2009). The Australian fauna includes four species in three genera, which have been found in stored food, insect cultures, and house dust, and phoretic on beetles in the family Trogidae. The common stored food species may be recognised by their wrinkled and ornamented cuticle. The family has sometimes been referred to as Sapracaridae.
