Introduction

The Rondeletiidae comprise a single genus with two species found in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (Paxton 1999, Paxton & Trnski 2003, 2016). A single species is known from Australian waters.

The redmouth whalefishes are meso- and bathypelagic, and feed on small crustaceans. They lack external scales, and have distinctive vertical rows of lateral line papillae on the pelvic fins. Maximum length attained is 11 cm.

The Rondeletiidae were reviewed by Paxton (1974) and Paxton et al. (2001) discussed relationships.
