Species Deveximentum ruconium (Hamilton, 1822)

Deep Pugnose Ponyfish, Pig-nosed Pony-fish, Pug-nosed Ponyfish, Pugnose Ponyfish

Generic Combinations

Introduction

The appropriate name for this species has been disputed for some years. The name Secutor ruconius has been in use for many years. Mochizuki & Hayashi (1989) regarded Chanda ruconius as not belonging in Secutor, but probably a species of Leiognathus. The terminal mouth and bands on the body extending below the lateral line are suggestive of Leiognathus, similar to L. striatus; however the dark ring around the eye and the bar below the eye are more suggestive of Secutor. Consequently the drawing is either highly inaccurate or a mixture of two different genera. Chakrabarty et al. (2009, 2010) has recommended retaining S. ruconius for this species until a revision is carried out. Abraham et al. (2011) have also retained the name Sector ruconius. Baldwin & Sparks (2011) recognised both S. ruconius and S. interruptus, but give no details about separation of the two. Tentatively we recognise Deveximentum ruconium here in the interests of stability.

Kottelat (2013) noted that Secutor is apparently a replacement name for Equula Cuvier, 1815, which is now regarded as a synonym of Leiognathus. He proposed using the name Deveximentum Fowler, 1904 for the genus typically referred to as Secutor (see discussion under genus). That would make Deveximentum ruconium or Deveximentum interruptum the appropriate name for this species. Tentatively we follow current usage in recognising Deveximentum in the interests of stability. Kottelat (2013) placed ruconius in the genus Leiognathus.
