Family PARABATHYNELLIDAE Noodt, 1965

  • PARABATHYNELLIDAE Noodt, 1965.
    Type genus:
     Parabathynella Chappuis, 1926.

Introduction

Schminke (1982) diagnosed the family. At least 150 species are known, more than listed by Coineau (1996) or Camacho (2006). Eight of the more than 40 genera occur in Australia, some with several species in interstitial subterranean waters. Phylogeography, biogeography and cryptic species in Australia were reviewed by Guzik et al. (2008). Biodiversity and endemism of the family in Australia were covered by Humphreys (2008).

Diagnosis

Pleon as wide as thorax. Antennae directed posteriorly, without exopod. Labrum with border armed with teeth or fine setae. Mandible with short 1-articled palp, with 1 seta, and with row of spines on gnathobase. Maxilla 1, article 2 with 2 or 3 simple setae on outer distal margin. Thoracopods 1-7 with 1-articled exopod with setae on lower margin; or with multiarticulate exopod and setae on both margins. Pleopod 1 absent or uniramous, 1-articled. Pleotelson without pair of dorsal setae. Uropodal peduncle long.
