Family PHYLLOXERIDAE
Introduction
Phylloxeridae are entirely of Northern Hemisphere origin. Three species in three genera are recorded for Australia.
Forewings with only 3 simple oblique veins, the cubitus and anal veins fused at the base. Wings held horizontally in repose. Antennae of alatae 3-segented with 2 primary rhinaria and without secondary rhinaria. Antennae of apterae short but evidently 3-segmented. Wings held horizontally. Siphunculi absent, cauda not developed. All females oviparous, sexuales without mouthparts.
The known host-alternating species induce galls on Carya (Juglandaceae) and migrate to Fagaceae. The biology of many of the galling species on Carya is unknown and other species are described from Fagaceae and Saliceae. The biology of the best known species, the vine phylloxera, is quite untypical of the family Phylloxeridae. Phylloxeridae are seemingly free from parasitoids. The generic classification of the world fauna of about 75 species is in need of revision.
