Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
Introduction
This family of mostly pelagic shrimps can be found from surface waters to abyssal depths in excess of 5000 metres. Holthuis (1993: 23) provided a key to the genera and two subgenera recognised at that time, but a new genus Alainopasiphaea has also since been recognised (Hayashi 1999). All but Alainopasiphaea are found in Australian waters.
Diagnosis
All pereiopods bearing exopods. First and second pairs of pereiopods chelate, with long, slender, pectinate fingers. Second pereiopod with carpus entire, not articulate. First maxilliped with broad lobe partially detached from distal end of exopod; endite much reduced. Second maxilliped without exopod; with terminal segment attached to distal transverse margin of preceding segment. Third maxilliped slender, pereiopod-like, not broad or operculate, with exopod bearing lash. Mandible without true molar process, with or without palp. First maxilla with distal endite not unusually large, proximal endite slightly reduced. Second maxilla with endite much suppressed, palp well developed, scaphognathite rounded proximally, not narrowly produced. Both arthrobranchaie and pleurobranchiae present on some posterior pereiopods. (Derived from Chace 1992).
