Introduction

About 30 species are known in nine genera in two subfamilies (Gutu 1996; Gutu & Sieg 1999). The members of the Hodometricinae probably have a life style similar to that of Apseudidae while the Pagurapseudinae inhabit empty gastropod shells. The latter, therefore, have one chela larger than the other and the posterior part of the body curled. Pagurapseudines have limbs very similar to those of hermit crabs (Paguridae). Both subfamilies established by Gutu (1981) are represented in Australia: Hodometricinae by Hodometrica, Indoapseudes and Similipedia and Pagurapseudinae by Macrolabrum and Pagurapseudes. Gutu (1996) provided a key to genera.

Diagnosis

Pleon with 5 pleonites. Antenna 2 with or without rudimentary squama. Mandibular palp 3–articled. Maxilla 1 with palp. Epignath of maxilliped broad, cup-shaped. Inner caudodistal seta of the maxillipedal endite not transformed into a leaf-shaped spine. Pereopod 1 ambulatory, non-fossorial. Pereopods 2–5 of same shape, similar to pereopod 1 or with specialised (sucker-like) protuberances on merus, carpus and propodus. Dactylus never transformed to an aesthetasc-like structure.
