- Neurorthini Nakahara, W. 1915. On the Hemerobiinae of Japan. Annotationes Zoologicae Japonenses 9: 11-48 [14] (as tribe, later raised to subfamily by Nakahara (1958)) [based on the genus Nevrorthus Costa (1863) and hence a misspelling].
Introduction
This small family was formerly included in the Sisyridae as a subfamily, but has been regarded as distinct since an appraisal by Zwick (1967). Adults closely resemble Sisyridae except that the wings are not hairy and some forewing costal crossveins are forked. Larvae are very different from those of Sisyridae: they have shorter jaws and lack ventral abdominal gills. Only one genus, Austroneurorthus Nakahara, 1958, occurs in Australia, and closely related taxa are known from Europe and Japan (Nakahara 1958). A systematic catalogue of species was given by Monserrat (1977).
Adults are found in damp habitats, often near streams, and the distinctive larvae occur in fast-flowing streams (New 1978).
As discussed by Oswald & Penny (1991), the correct original spelling of the genus on which the family is based is `Nevrorthus' not Neurorthus. Thus, the family name should properly be `Nevrorthidae'. The corrupted `Neurorthidae' is used here simply for familiarity of usage.

Family OSMYLIDAE
Compiler and date details
T.R. New La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia
Introduction
Osmylidae are diverse in Australia, and five subfamilies are represented. Two of these, the endemic Porisminae and Eidoporisminae, each contain only a single species (New 1983b). Spilosmylinae are diverse in New Guinea (New 1986a) and the two Australian species are tropical (New 1986b). The two larger subfamilies are both gondwanan. Kempyninae occur also in New Zealand and temperate South America, and Stenosmylinae are found in the latter area (Kimmins 1940; New 1983a, 1986b, 1986c, 1989). Osmylinae, widespread elsewhere in the world, appear to be absent, as is Protosmylinae.
The biology of most taxa is unknown, or inferred from fragmentary information. Porisminae and Stenosmylinae are found in eucalypt woodlands, and their larvae feed on small arthropods on and under bark. By contrast, the large Kempyninae are almost always associated with waterbodies, and adults are found occasionally in groups on rocks or under bridges near water. Their larvae have been found under stones and in leaf litter beside streams and lakes. In common with those of the European Osmylus Latreille, 1802, they may feed by probing soft mud for small prey such as dipteran larvae. Most Australian Osmylidae, at least in the south, are univoltine, with clearly defined flight periods (Smithers 1990).

Family SISYRIDAE
Compiler and date details
T.R. New La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia
Introduction
Sisyridae, 'spongeflies', derive their common name from the specialised larval habit of feeding on freshwater sponges and bryozoans (Parfin & Gurney 1956). Adults are small brownish lacewings found near water; larvae are very distinctive in having ventral abdominal gills in the second and third instars and long straight jaws.
The Australian species have not been reviewed comprehensively, and the two genera recorded are both geographically widespread. A number of undescribed species were listed by Monserrat (1977). The family appears to be most diverse in the east of the continent. World species were listed by Monserrat (1977).
