Family NYMPHIDAE
Compiler and date details
T.R. New La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia
Introduction
The genera of this predominantly Australian family were formerly placed in two distinct families: Myiodactylus Brauer, 1866 and its allies in the Myiodactylidae, and the apparently more advanced Nymphes Leach, 1814 and its relatives in the 'true' Nymphidae (New 1984). Most of the Australian species occur in eastern Australia (New 1982), and a number of broad-winged taxa are found in New Guinea (New 1987). Several undescribed species are known.
Larvae of Myiodactylus and its allies are flattened arboreal forms, whereas those of Nymphes and related genera are bark-frequenters or occur in leaf litter, and may be covered in debris.
