Superfamily NEOBISIOIDEA Chamberlin, 1930

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

The Neobisioidea consists of seven families that were placed by Harvey (1992) in their own infraorder, the Hemictenata. Neobisioids have only recently been recorded from Australia (Harvey 1991, 1993, 1998), and were not listed in an earlier version of the checklist in the Zoological Catalogue of Australia (Harvey 1985).

Diagnosis

The Neobisioidea differ from all other pseudoscorpions with a venom apparatus in one or both of the chelal fingers (the Iocheirata) by the presence of several teeth on the movable cheliceral finger, the serrula exterior attached for at most 2/3 of its length, and the chelicera without a velum.

Family HYIDAE Chamberlin, 1930

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia; updated May 2008, from Harvey & Volschank (2007)

Introduction

Representatives of the Hyidae are small pseudoscorpions that occur in leaf litter or under rocks in several regions of the world, including north-western Australia, South-east Asia, India, Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Harvey's (1993) revision of the family (Harvey 1993) recognised three genera and nine species, making it one of the smallest pseudoscorpion families. However, Indohyinae is now synonymised with Hyidae, following Harvey & Volkschenk (2007).

Diagnosis

Members of the Hyidae differ from other Neobisioidea by the presence of a sub-basl mound on femur I and II, the minute setae on the female anterior genital operculum, and have 3 (occasionally 2) stout setae on the posterior-basal margin of the pedipalpal femur.

Family PARAHYIDAE Harvey, 1992

Compiler and date details

Family added, following Harvey et al. (2007).

Introduction

Parahyidae are a monotypic family; the single species is restricted to the intertidal zone. Harvey et al. (2007) gave the first records of the family for Australia, from Darwin, NT, and from NW Western Australia.

Family SYARINIDAE Chamberlin, 1930

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

The Syarinidae comprises 16 genera and nearly 100 species (Harvey 1991), the largest of which is Ideoblothrus, with 37 species. Many syarinid genera are restricted to the Northern Hemisphere, but a distinct tropical element is also apparent (e.g. Ideobisium and Ideoblothrus), and the recent discovery of an endemic Tasmanian genus further extends the range of this family (Harvey 1998).

The described Australian fauna consists of two cavernicolous species of Ideoblothrus (Harvey 1991) and two litter-dwelling species of Anysrius from Tasmania (Harvey 1998), but numerous undescribed species of Ideobisium and Ideoblothrus are known from the tropical rainforests of eastern Queensland (Harvey, unpublished data).

Diagnosis

All Australian syarinid species differ from other neobisioids by the presence of a lanceolate trichobothrium t; however, this feature does not hold for several Northern Hemisphere species currently attributed to the family (Muchmore 1982).
