Introduction

The family Microtegeidae includes two genera and 31 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). They are most common in soil and litter in tropical rainforest in the Neotropical Region (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009), but some species occur in Africa and south and southeast Asia (Subias 2004, 2011). The Australian Microtegeidae are very poorly known, with only a single record of an unidentified species of Microtegeus from forest soil in New South Wales (Osler 1997; Colloff & Halliday 1998).

The family name Microtegeidae is a nomen nudum, because Balogh (1972) did not include any description or diagnosis of the family (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, Article 13).
