Family MEROPEIDAE

Compiler and date details

K.J. Lambkin, Queensland Museum, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (1996) Updated (1998) by S. Shattuck, CSIRO Entomology, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

Introduction

The family Meropeidae comprises Merope tuber Newman from eastern North America, and Austromerope poultoni Killington from south-west Western Australia. Adults are of medium size (forewing length around 14 mm), and are distinguished by the dense, reticulate venation of the wings, which in repose are folded flat over the abdomen (in other winged scorpionflies they are folded roof-like over the abdomen).

Adults of Austromerope are found in winter and spring and have mostly been collected in pitfall traps. The immature stages of both species are unknown.
