Family ANISITSIELLIDAE Koenike, 1910

Introduction

The Anisitsiellidae is a large and heterogeneous family of water mites, which will probably be broken up into several families when it is thoroughly revised (Cramer & Smith 1993; Harvey 1998; Walter et al. 2009). The family occurs in streams, ponds and springs world-wide, with some species found in more unusual microhabitats such as mound springs and water-filled leaf axils on plants (Harvey 1998). The larvae, where known, are parasites of aquatic flies. The known Australian fauna includes four genera and ten species, with most of the species described by Cook (1986) and Harvey (1990). The world fauna was catalogued by Viets (1987) and the Australian genera were reviewed by Harvey (1998).

Family OXIDAE Veits, 1926

Introduction

The Oxidae is a family of aquatic mites that can be found swimming in pools, ponds and lakes world-wide (Walter et al. 2009). Their larvae, where known, are parasites of Chironomidae. Cook (1986) pointed out that the genus-level classification is very unstable, and is likely to change dramatically when the family is thoroughly revised. The Australian fauna includes two genera and 24 species, most of which were included in the key in Cook (1986). Harvey (1998) provided a key to genera, but since that time Di Sabatino et al. (2009) have relegated Frontipoda into synonymy with Oxus, so many of the generic combinations have changed.

Family TORRENTICOLIDAE Piersig, 1902

Introduction

The Torrenticolidae is a small family of water mites that are found in springs and streams world-wide (Walter et al. 2009). The adults are presumably predators, and the larvae, where known, are parasites of Chironomidae. The Australian fauna includes two species of Monatractides which were described by Cook (1986), catalogued by Viets (1987), reviewed by Harvey (1998), and revised by Pešić & Smit (2011). The single unconfirmed record of Torrenticola may be based on a misidentification. The generic and subgeneric classification of the family has been subject to extensive revision, and I have not attempted to place the Australian species in subgenera.
