Species Hydrodroma despiciens (Müller, 1776)

• Hydrachna despiciens Müller, O.F. 1776. Zoologicae Danicae Prodromus, seu Animalium Daniae et Norvegiae indigenarum characteres, nomina et synonyma imprimis popularium. Copenhagen : Havniae Vol. 32 pp. 1-282. [pls published in 1777].

Introduction

This species has been reported from Australia by a number of authors. However, it now appears that specimens identified as H. despiciens world-wide actually represent a mixture of several species (Cook, 1986). The identity of the Australian specimens identified as H. despiciens has not been fully resolved, and this species is not included in the key to Australian species of Hydrodroma in Pešić & Smit (2011).
