Family HYDRODROMIDAE Viets, 1936

Introduction

Adult mites in the family Hydrodromidae can be found swimming in streams, ponds and lakes world-wide (Walter et al. 2009). The adults of the one well-studied species, Hydrodroma despiciens, feed on the eggs of chironomid flies, while its larvae are parasites of flies in the Chironomidae and other families. Cook (1986) drew attention to the difficulty in separating species of Hydrodroma, which was thought to be caused either by intra-specific variation or the existence of multiple closely-related species. When Harvey (1998) reviewed the Australian fauna, only two species were known, but since then six more species have been described (Pesic & Smit 2007a, 2007b, 2011).

Species Hydrodroma despiciens (Müller, 1776)

Introduction

This species has been reported from Australia by a number of authors. However, it now appears that specimens identified as H. despiciens world-wide actually represent a mixture of several species (Cook, 1986). The identity of the Australian specimens identified as H. despiciens has not been fully resolved, and this species is not included in the key to Australian species of Hydrodroma in Pešić & Smit (2011).

Family HYDRYPHANTIDAE Piersig, 1896

Introduction

The Hydryphantidae is a large family of aquatic mites that are often found crawling on submerged vegetation in ponds and pools (Walter et al. 2009). The deutonymphs and adults of some species prey on the eggs of aquatic insects, and the larvae are parasites of aquatic bugs, flies, and other groups of insects. The family has sometimes been divided into several smaller families, but the concept used here is that of Harvey (1998). The largest single work on Australian water mites is by Cook (1986), the world fauna was catalogued by Viets (1987), and the Australian fauna was reviewed by Harvey (1998). The Australian fauna of Hydryphantidae includes 11 genera and 26 species. Unidentified species have been recorded from Australia a number of times as listed for each genus, and unidentified Hydryphantidae were also reported by Fulton (1983) and Williams & Proctor (2002).

Introduction

Parathyas is used here as the oldest available name for this taxon, following Di Sabatino et al. (2010). The genus Parathyas is known from Australia only on the basis of unidentified species, as reported by Malipatil & Blyth (1982) (as Thyas sp.).

Family ZELANDOTHYADIDAE Cook, 1983

Introduction

Cook (1983) described the new subfamily Zealandothyadinae for an unusual species of aquatic mite from New Zealand. Harvey (1998) promoted the group to family level, and noted that the correct placement of the family has not yet been settled. The family includes two genera, one each in Australia and New Zealand. The single Australian species is known only from a stream in Tasmania. The small amount of available information on the family was reviewed by Cook (1986), Harvey (1998) and Walter et al. (2009).
