Family HAPALOGENYIDAE

CAAB: 37350000

Velvetchin

Compiler and date details

10 November 2016 - Douglass F. Hoese

Introduction

The family contains a single genus with approximately 6 species from the Indo-Pacific region. Various studies have suggested that the genus Hapalogenys may not belong in the Haemulidae. Johnson (1984) regarded it as incertae sedis in the Percoidei and subsequently Springer & Raasch (1995) placed it into a separate family, the Hapalogenyidae. Leis & Carson-Ewart (2000) suggested a possible relationship with Lobotes. Sanciangco et al. (2011) also found evidence that the genus was related to Lobotes and distinct from the Haemulidae. We follow these recent works in retaining the genus in its own family pending completion of research by J. Leis & A. Gill.
