Species Hippocampus biocellatus Kuiter, 2001

False-eye Seahorse, False-eyed Seahorse

Introduction

Lourie et al. (2016) regarded this species as a junior synonym of H. planifrons. Kuiter (2001) noted differences in coloration and body depth separating the two species, which Lourie et al. (2016) dismissed as possibly due to sexual dimorphism and/or ontogeny. We see little reason to synonymise the two species until further material becomes available.
