Introduction

Evaniids are solitary parasites of cockroach oothecae (Carlson 1979; Gauld & Bolton 1996). They are readily recognised by their hatchet-shaped metasoma, hence the common name of ensign-flies in North America.

The family is worldwide in distribution and is represented in Australia by some 37 described species belonging to the genera, most belonging to Acanthinevania and Szepligetiella (Deans 2006). The Australian species are thought to be mostly endemic, although several species, including A. mediana and A. princeps, are found in both Australia and New Guinea. The cosmopolitan species Evania appendigaster L. also occurs in Australia. The true size of the Australian fauna is difficult to assess given the morphological homogeneity of the family.
