Family EUPTEROTIDAE

Compiler and date details

Introduction

The Eupterotidae were revised by Turner (1922b) and included in Seitz, Macrolepidoptera of the World, by Seitz (1924b) and Strand (1924). The composition of the family and the subfamily arrangement used here follows Forbes (1955).

In Australia six species are included in three genera but the Australian endemic genus Panacela Walker contains an unresolved complex of species. In Cotana Walker most of the species are known from New Guinea and the sexes are difficult to associate. Cotana Walker was last revised by Rothschild (1917) and when the New Guinean species are better studied the Australian ones may be more reliably associated with them.

Eupterote Hübner (which extends to Africa) and Cotana Walker are, within Australia, confined to moist areas of northern Queensland. Panacela Walker is found along the eastern coast from the Atherton Tableland in Queensland to southern N.S.W.

The larval hairs of Panacela lewinae (Lewin) have been associated with skin irritation in humans (Southcott 1978, 1987).
