Introduction

[After Common in Nielsen et al. (1996: 99)].
This family has a world wide distribution, but is poorly represented in Australia by only 14 described species, all of which are referred to Ethmia Hübner. Twelve of the Australian species are endemic. The group has usally been accorded family status, but Hodges (1978) treated it as a subfamily of the Oecophoridae, and Minet (1990) as a subfamily of his greatly enlarged family Elachistidae. The Palaearctic fauna was comprehensively reviewed by Sattler (1967) and the American fauna by Powell (1973). A taxonomic revision of the Australian species was published by Powell (1985), who has also provided most of our knowledge of their ecology and host preferences (Powell 1983).
