Species Parupeneus crassilabris (Valenciennes, 1831)

Doublebar Goatfish, Double-banded Goatfish, Double-bar Goatfish, Two-banded Goatfish

Introduction

In earlier literature this species was treated as a synonym of Parupeneus bifasciatus, the name used for a wide ranging Indo-Pacific goatfish. Currently P. bifasciatus is recognised as a junior synonym of P. trifasciatus (see Günther, 1859 p 407) and fishes identified under this name have been shown to represent three separate taxa, P. trifasciatus, P. crassilabris and P. insularis (see Randall & Myers 2002, Randall 2004 and comments under P. trifasciatus).
