Introduction

Traditionally placed in the order Pseudophyllidea Carus, 1863, this order has recently been supressed based on its polyphylectic nature, first demonstrated by Bray et al. (1999). Subsequent studies have supported the original observations (Kuchta et al. 2008), resulting in the suppression of the Pseudophyllidea and the erection of a new order, Diphyllobothriidea, containing a single family, the Diphyllobothriidae. Adults occur in reptiles, mammals and birds with intermediate stages in crustaceans, fish and reptiles (Bray et al. 1994).
