GENERAL
Definition and characters by Morrison, H. & Morrison, E.R. 1922. A redescription of the type species of the genera of Coccidae based on species originally described by Maskell. Proceedings of the United States National Museum 60: 1–120, Steinweden, J.B. 1929. Bases for the generic classification of the coccoid family Coccidae. Annals of the Entomological Society of America 22: 197–245 and by Hodgson, C.J. 1994. The scale insect family Coccidae: an identification manual to genera. Wallingford, Oxon, UK : CAB International Institute of Entomology 639 pp..
SYSTEMATICS
Subfamily: Eulecaniinae. Until 1922 this genus has been credited by several authors to Crawford. Morrison, H. & Morrison, E.R. 1922. A redescription of the type species of the genera of Coccidae based on species originally described by Maskell. Proceedings of the United States National Museum 60: 1–120 discussed the issue, showed that the genus cannot be referred to Crawford and credited it to Cockerell. Morrison, H. & Morrison, E.R. 1966. An annotated list of generic names of the scale insects (Homoptera: Coccoidea). Miscellaneous Publication United States Department of Agriculture 1015: 1–206, while discussing again the authorship, were less decisive, and proposed several alternatives. It is here concluded that the author is Maskell, because this case is similar to that of Aspidoproctus (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 1954. Opinions and declarations, Opinion No. 268. Acceptance of the generic name Aspidoproctus (Class Insecta, Order Hemiptera) as from Newstead, 1901. Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 5: 397–408) and to several other generic names in the Coccoidea which are credited to the first author who published it.
