Introduction

Of the six recognised subspecies of C. californica, the Checklist Committee, Ornithological Society of New Zealand (2010) include only C. californica brunnescens as present in New Zealand. Australian populations were derived from New Zealand and we follow the Checklist Committee (2010) in referring these populations to C. c. brunnescens.
