Family CHUNEOLIDAE Woltereck, 1909

Introduction

The Chuneolidae are a small monotypic family found at abyssopelagic depths around the world. The family appears to be most closely related to the Lanceolidae. The only Australian species, Chuneola paradoxa Woltereck, 1909, was reported from the Arafura Sea and the Tasman Sea by Vinogradov et al. (1982).

 

Diagnosis

Head deeper than long; rostrum present; anteroventral margin moderately recessed; eyes small, round. Body dorsoventrally flattened. Antenna 1 longer than antenna 2; peduncular article 1 longer than article 2; article 2 longer than article 3; calceoli absent. Mandible molar absent; palp absent. Maxilla 1 palp 1-articulate. Gnathopod 1 simple; carpus longer than propodus; dactylus minute. Gnathopod 2 dactylus minute. Pereopods some or all of 3–7 with hooded dactyli. Pereopod 3 carpus longer than propodus. Pereopod 5 subequal to pereopod 6; without posteroventral lobe; carpus linear. Pereopod 6 subequal to pereopod 7; basis linear. Pereopod 7 basis linear. Uropod 2 inner ramus subequal to outer ramus. Uropod 3 not sexually dimorphic; biramous.
