Family CHERNETIDAE Menge, 1855
Compiler and date details
Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Introduction
The Chernetidae are the largest family of pseudoscorpions. Many are corticolous, but others are found in a variety of habitats including leaf litter and under rocks, and several are known to be routinely phoretic on insects. The family currently includes nearly 100 genera and over 600 species (Harvey 1991) and is distributed over much of the world. Several subfamilial and tribal names have been proposed in the literature, but only three subfamily names are currently valid. All three subfamilies are represented in the Australian fauna.
Diagnosis
Chernetids differ from all other cheliferoids in lacking a venom apparatus in the fixed chelal finger.

Subfamily Chernetinae Menge, 1855
Compiler and date details
Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Introduction
The Chernetinae are probably a paraphyletic group (Harvey 1995), and clearly are in need of intensive study to determine their relationships and composition. The subfamily includes the majority of chernetids, and is strongly represented in Australia.
Diagnosis
The Chernetinae can be distinguished from Goniochernetinae by the straight posterior carapaceal margin, and from Lamprochernetinae by the lack of T-shaped spermathcae.

Subfamily Goniochernetinae Beier, 1932
Compiler and date details
Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Introduction
The Goniochernetinae are the smallest of the chernetid subfamilies with only 10 species in three genera (Harvey 1991). Goniochernes is found in western and central Africa, while Conicochernes and Calymmachernes are endemic to Australia.
Diagnosis
The Goniochernetinae are easily distinguished from other chernetids by the angulate posterior margin of the carapace. In this respect they resemble the Sternophoridae but, unlike all chernetids, sternophorids have an inter-coxal pseudosternum and a venom apparatus in both chelal fingers.

Subfamily Lamprochernetinae Beier, 1932
Compiler and date details
Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Introduction
The Lamprochernetinae comprise only seven genera (Harvey 1995), most of which are restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. In the Australian fauna, the subfamily is represented by one introduced species, and two species of Megachernes from northern Queensland, both of which are commensal with native mammals.
Diagnosis
Lamprochernetines differ from all other chernetid by the form of the female spermathecae which are T-shaped.
